While the problem of plastic pollution appears to be growing—at least people are taking notice, thanks to the efforts of artists all over the planet.
As we highlighted in a blog from last January, “3 Artists Use Trash to Create Awareness,” photographer-artist Benjamin Von Wong of San Francisco is one of many artists sharing the massive problem of plastic waste. Recently, I learned that the eye-opening video from his “Mermaids Hate Plastic” project went viral, garnering an impressive 1.5 million hits in a single day—so I had to share it!
And while we’re on the topic of creating awareness about plastic pollution, I couldn’t help but also pass along these 12 beautiful works of art, brought to us from plasticpollutioncoalition.org. (You’ll never guess who was featured at #3!)

My grandparents had a wind spinner made out of a plastic 2 litre bottle. Another grandmother used 2 litre bottles to hold her yarn (in the “old” days, 2 litre bottles had a “cup” surrounding the bottom, so when she cut off the rounded part of the clear plastic, and put the “cup” of sturdy, level plastic back on, she could use the modified bottle to hold a skein of yarn, and keep it from tangling. Personally, I LOVE that Norwex now has TWO products made from recycled water bottles 🙂
This is an area I know I need to improve on. Over the years I have gotten in the habit of purchasing bottled water. I recycle, but I am spending money on water lol. I have purchased a water bottle and am working on getting in the habit of filling it up prior to bed and putting lemon in it. I bring it to work with me. This will save me money and the environment.
I got goosebumps watching that video.. just shared it on my Facebook.. that is POWERFUL!
