The New Toxic Chemical Law That Will Keep Us Safer

New Chemical Regulations

It’s been a great year for consumers in the United States! On June 22, 2016, President Barack Obama signed into law the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act. This act amends our nation’s primary chemicals management law and revises the standard under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). This new law will make a positive impact in the U.S. and help us move toward a brighter, safer future.

What does this new act do?

  • It enforces clear deadlines that require the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to evaluate new and existing chemicals against a new, risk-based safety standard.
  • It requires the EPA to make decisions and take regulatory action concerning evaluated chemicals.
  • It increases the public transparency of chemical information by limiting unwarranted claims of confidentiality and allowing for the appropriate sharing of confidential information with states and health and environmental professionals.
  • It provides a source of funding for the EPA to carry out these significant new responsibilities.

Who does this new act help?

The new risk-based safety standard and the requirement of chemical evaluations could prevent harmful chemicals from making their way into consumer products. Better transparency allows safer products to be on the shelves of stores. It also allows consumers to make better-informed choices about the products they choose to purchase for themselves and their families.

When does this new act take effect?

Although the new act takes immediate effect, it does allow the EPA two years to develop policies, procedures and guidance in order to carry out the bill. During this time it might be best to continue doing your own research and using cleaning products you know are natural and safer for your family. Of course, if you clean with microfiber and just water, there’s no need to worry about ever using harsh chemicals!

I agree and I sure hope they only improve on it. Also concerned if there are any actual teeth in this act.

That’s why it’s even more important that we keep working to make a difference.

This was a HUGE need for consumers! People literally have no clue what is in their products. They worry so much about eating organic because that’s been shared so much, however, they don’t think twice about using toxic cleaning products in their homes or on their bodies.

So true! I love how we are all working to help green cleaning be as widely talked about as clean eating!

I don’t think this will change the way I shop but it will help me feel that products are safer.

I think this law is so needed! I am sure there will be some growing pains, but every change to help educate consumers and keep our families safe is important.

I think it’s a move in a better direction. But I also think it’s not nearly enough of a positive change! And I do not think it will impact consumer buying desicions. For that to happen consumers need better education about how harmful chemicals actually affect them, not just better labeling. I appreciate that I get to have a small part in bringing that type of education to my friends and neighbours through Norwex!

I just worry that a lot of the “funding” (aka, taxpayers dollars) will just be funneled into government waste, as it usually is…
