National Crush a Can Day

Learn how you CAN celebrate this special holiday

Looking for a reason to celebrate today? Well, look no further!

Today is National Crush a Can Day and it’s the perfect occasion for you, your family and friends to participate in a fun and eco-friendly activity—crushing as many aluminum cans as possible and then recycling them!

National Crush a Can Day was created to promote the benefits of recycling and is observed every year on September 27.

Here are some fun ways to celebrate this smashing holiday!

can

  • Hold a can-crushing contest!
Line up your cans so you and others can have a can-crushing race—whoever crushes the most cans in a minute wins a prize!
  • Host a can-crushing party!
Use cans (and other recyclable items) to decorate your party. Then, gather around in your backyard with friends and family and start crushing away!
  • DIY Projects!
If you’re feeling especially crafty, you should try your hand at some cute and clever upcycling projects. Check out these ideas from diyncrafts.com and learn how you can create everything from cookie cutters to jewelry from your aluminum cans!

When you’re done celebrating, remember to take all of your crushed cans to the nearest recycling center so they can be recycled and used again to create new aluminum products!

cautionNote: Be cautious when crushing cans as they can be sharp and may cause injury if handled improperly. Here are some helpful tips on how to crush an aluminum can safely and easily.

If you are unable to crush the cans yourself, simply take them to your nearest recycling center and they will crush them for you.

Norwex Celebrates National Crush a Can Day

The Norwex Team had a smashing good time celebrating National Crush a Can Day on September 27, 2016, with a race to see who could crush their can the quickest!

These aluminum cans didn’t stand a chance against our Norwex Team! They were promptly recycled after this snapshot so they can be used to create new aluminum products.

If you lay all the aluminum cans recycled in 2010 end to end, they could circle the earth 169 times!

Here in Québec, Canada we bring empty cans back to our grocery store, deposit them one by one into a special crusher and get cash back for recycling. The machine does not accept crush cans – because it cannot read the code.

We don’t typically have aluminum cans around, but I love this!

We haven’t had to crush cans for years, but many years ago my uncle made a can crusher and hung it in his garage above a garbage can. The cans would be crushed and then he would take them to a center and get paid by the pound. My cousin and I would collect cans from all over the place to bring home and crush them. It was fun.

One thing I like about Michigan is you can return pop can for 10 cents. I think if more places did this it would cut down on the waste.

Even when the deposit is a nickel a can. There are many who will collect them for the deposit!

That’s true, Chris. Here in Texas I collect cans for my friend, who turns them in for a few dollars now and then. Every little bit helps!
