There’s no denying that plastic in our oceans is a big problem. While most trash doesn’t start off in the middle of the ocean, it ends up there after being carried by rivers and canals. It’s become such a big problem that there are predictions that plastic weight will outweigh all the fish by 2050! But a new Dutch start-up company is working to stop this growing problem. The solution? Bubbles. That’s right, The Great Bubble Barrier start-up has created a bubble barrier to stop trash from getting into the ocean and bring it to the surface, making it easier to gather.
The idea of cleaning up rivers and canals seems like a big challenge for such a simple design, but seeing the Great Bubble Barrier in action will make you realize how effective it can be.

Impressive! Immediately sell this to China. I’ve never seen more plastic garbage in rivers than in China!
This is a good idea. I hope it catches on in other parts of the world.
Such a good idea!
Can you give more information about where this is being used? Are there any plans to use it for the Mississippi river?
Hi Kisha, as near as we can tell, this device has been tested and used only in The Netherlands so far, but we hope it will spread further. Here’s a link for more information or if you’re interested in sponsoring this company: https://thegreatbubblebarrier.com/en/bubble-barrier-en/
