Creative Sustainability That Gives Back to the Community

Time to Get Crafty

Why Waste?

Of the five Rs, (reduce, reuse, recycle, repurpose and refuse), recycling is the one we usually hear about the most. However, the most effective way to deal with waste is not to create it in the first place. By reusing an item, we can lessen the amount of waste destined for recycling centers and/or landfills.

That’s where creative reuse centers like SCRAP Denton come in. SCRAP Denton is a creative reuse center that helps the Denton, Texas, community be more sustainable through reducing and reusing. Organizations like this one play a special role in protecting the environment while also giving back to the community.

Reusing, Creatively

SCRAP Denton is just one of several creative reuse centers across the country that are part of the SCRAP USA network. These nonprofit, donation-based stores and donation centers offer workshops and educational programs focused on sustainable living. SCRAP Denton offers a gallery of artwork made from reused materials as well as a store, where donated materials and items created by local reuse artisans are sold. Earnings from the gallery and store are used to support the organization’s mission.

Through donations, SCRAP Denton diverted more than 17 tons of usable materials from the waste stream in 2016 alone. Organizations like SCRAP Denton use a cycle of creative sustainability to reduce waste by reusing. Donations stocked at the store are available for purchase to those who want to create their own projects. The projects can then be used, displayed or given as gifts. Finally, the projects can be disassembled for the materials to be reused again or donated back to SCRAP. Donations of craft supplies, paper, fabric, gift-wrap, office supplies and more are accepted.

Working Together

Creative reuse centers are a great way for the community to come together. Just like Repair Cafes, SCRAP organizations allow people to get involved in their communities and share what they know about reusing and creating. Donating usable materials to SCRAP helps individuals and businesses in the community reduce waste. The educational programs and workshops help spread awareness about reducing waste while giving participants the opportunity to be creative and have fun, making them more likely to reuse in the future. Creative reuse centers also support the community’s local artists and increase awareness about sustainable living. Interested in learning more?
