Eco-Friendly Activities for You and Your Family: Gardening

No matter what time of year it is, it’s always a great time for some eco-friendly activities and adventures you can share with your family. Here’s a fun and educational activity you can do with your kids that will also encourage them to start caring for the environment.

Plant a Garden

Your kids probably won’t mind getting their hands a little dirty, and they can take pride in knowing that they’re growing their very own plants, while also helping the environment!

Here are a few benefits of gardening with your children:

  • It instills an appreciation and respect for nature.
  • It can improve nutrition knowledge and a preference for eating fruits and vegetables.
  • It can give you and your children a sense of accomplishment as you plant your garden and watch it grow.
  • It’s a great way to spend quality time with your children as you work toward a common goal.

So try your hand at gardening with your children today, and make a difference in their lives and with the environment as well!

I believe that it is so important to learn how to garden and grow food that it should be taught in every school. My children love to garden with me and they have a fairy garden of their own. It’s also a great way to teach responsibility. The garden is alive and they need to care for it. When they take good care of their fairy gardens sometimes the fairies leave them special rocks or trinkets. They also earn money since I pay them a penny for every weed they pull out of my vegetable garden!

We love to garden too! It’s helped to improve the veggie eating around here 🙂 they are apt to pick a sweet cherry tomato or crunch a couple raw green beans while we harvest! Natural nutrition! We talk alot about the weeds trying to choke out the plants kind of like wrong doings try to choke out the good we can plant 😉

Probably won’t mind getting dirty? Ha! My 18 month old would swim in the dirt if it were physically possible. He helped me weed the garden today and, by the looks of things, he had a great time. “Ok, now this one (pointing)” was followed by a tug, a grunt, and a delighted squeal as the weed let loose and dirt rained down over him. He would stop to sniff the flowers and point at them. I would say “that is our flower friend and it stays there” and he’d move on to another spot. He’s loved planting, watering (what kid doesn’t love spraying stuff with a hose), harvesting, and eating our bounty. If you start them young, gardening becomes as natural as any other beloved hobby. But, of course, you can’t eat a bicycle.

It is December now and we are still eating fresh carrots from my summer garden. It was a wonderful growing season in our area north of Montreal. So rewarding to see food grow.
