Revisiting Endocrine Disruptors

During the 2013 Norwex North American Conference, in my Chemicals of Concern discussion, I discussed the new and emerging consensus with regard to the problem of endocrine disrupting chemicals in our homes and our environment.

chemicals of concern 2013

The following are some excerpts from this talk.

Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interfere with normal hormone action. There are more than fifty hormones and hormone related transmitters that integrate and control normal body functions for your entire lifespan, it’s not just our reproduction that they impact. Hormones and their pathways are critical to the normal functioning of every tissue and organ in your body. Our health and the health of the environment depend on our ability to reproduce normally, and a healthy endocrine system is critical for this. There are nearly 800 chemicals that are known or suspected of being capable of interfering with hormone reception, synthesis or conversion. Only a very small fraction of these have ever been researched in organisms, if at all…”

“These documents conclude that there is emerging evidence for adverse reproductive outcome, from exposure to EDCs and mounting evidence for effects of the chemicals on thyroid function, obesity, metabolism, insulin and glucose homeostatis.”

“Based on this research, the Endocrine Society, the European Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and the Pediatric Endocrine Society in the U.S. put forward a statement calling for urgent action regarding endocrine disruptors and their effects.”
