Resolutions, Inspirations, Thankfulness

With the holidays comes a chance for us all to reexamine our lives and recharge our spirits.

So much of our satisfaction with life is based on our perceptions, on the attitudes we hold. “Do I have the latest SUV… is my house big enough… my dress size small enough… have I spent enough on Christmas?” I know I sometimes get so busy and distracted chasing that prize that I lose sight of the truly important stuff, of just how much I have to be grateful for. (…by the way, has anyone actually MET the “Joneses”?)

gratitude

Breaking that cycle of disappointment, of never feeling good enough, or having enough, is a worthy endeavor. I was excited to recently come across a rather neat idea, what’s known as a “Gratitude Jar”. Other variants refer to an Inspiration Jar or Resolution Jar, but the idea is the same; though it’s probably best not to drop your resolutions into your gratitude jar — start a second jar instead.

What are you grateful for? What quotes inspire you? What ideas make you happy? What do you resolve to improve in your life?

How to Create a Gratitude Jar
Step 1: Get a jar, some small pieces of paper, and a pen or pencil. You can decorate your jar with a ribbon or stickers if you’d like.

My kids made this Gratitude Jar for Mother’s Day and i keep it by my bed.

Step 2: As you go about your day, jot your thoughts down on the slips of paper and drop them into the jar. Of course, you do not have to use a jar; you can use a bound paper notebook or computer, but if you can rally your family into joining in and contributing, the jar works best.

Then, whenever you need a boost, a reminder that all’s not lost, that you are good enough after all, just reach for the jar and pull out a few reminders. Best of all, it’s a totally natural remedy — no side effects! You’ll love how it changes your perspective and gets your day going on a positive note!

Science is confirming what we already know, that our physical health is intimately tied to our thoughts and perceptions, to us nurturing a sense of purpose and gratefulness. In that regard, this jar is an awesome exercise, a great reminder of just how much we DO have to be grateful for.

This makes a great gift for the holidays or anytime.
