Plant a Memorial Tree

plant a memorial tree - trees at sunset by lakeThe U.S. holiday of Memorial Day is approaching—a time to honor and remember loved ones, especially those who have served in the military. A great way to “Live Green” while participating in this holiday is to plant a memorial tree! A tree can be a natural, “living memorial” that will honor memories of a loved one throughout your own lifetime as well as for generations to come. Even if it’s not in honor of a specific individual, you can plant a tree in remembrance of all those who have collectively protected and served our country.

Planting a tree also benefits the environment in lots of ways. In addition to bringing natural beauty to the surroundings, trees perform many other important functions. For example:

  • An average-sized tree creates enough oxygen in one year to supply a family of four.
  • Planting trees in strategic locations around buildings and homes can cut air-conditioning costs up to 50 percent.
  • During photosynthesis, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen.
  • For every 20 million trees planted, the earth gets an additional 260 million tons of oxygen.
  • One acre of trees can absorb up to 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide in a single year.
  • Planting trees supports the natural habitat of animals and birds, including many endangered species.
  • Planting trees results in more wood and paper products, which can be easily recycled.

For a small donation, many organizations like these will plant a tree for you and also personalize a card as a gift:

Spring is the perfect time to plant a tree, whether it’s in honor or memory of a loved one,
the country or just to bring a little more beauty to the world!
