We make sure that our laundry is always a big load–with 3 kids (1 in cloth diapers) it’s not hard. 🙂 We also teach our kids to shut off the water while brushing teeth, washing faces with a body cloth, etc.

We use the Water Saving Mode on our washing machine and reuse the same cup for our coffee or tea during the day instead of grabbing a new one to wash later.

I discovered it takes almost 4 litres of water for the hot water to get to my shower so I save that water to rinse the tub when I clean or for plants.

I am very cognisant of how much water I use to rinse dishes in the sink and will reuse rinsing water from one cup/plate to another and put the plug in when I’m rinsing so monitor how much I use.

I put a large bucket in the shower to collect water as the shower warms up. Then, I use that water for the bath tub.

When I was young, there was a water shortage/drought and conservation efforts were encouraged. We had to turn the water off in our shower while we were washing our hair, then turn it back on to rinse! With a family of six, I sometimes do this to make sure there is enough HOT water!

Since moving out of the country and I get a water bill every 3 months I have been looking closer at water wastage. I fix leaks right away. Before it is fixed I place a container under the drip. I use that container of water and put it my cat’s water dish. I have been able to cut down my time in the shower by just getting cleaned up and out. I turn off the water when brushing my teeth. My new washer senses how big the load is and will use the right amount of water. Next I would love to get rain barrels in all my down spouts and I can use rain water to water my plants and lawn versus my hose.
