A local bike shop had several bicycle wheels they were getting rid of just lining the walls of a store. I was drawn to the various, rusty gears in the center of all the spokes. At the time, I had NO idea what I was going to do with them, but loved them and accepted the challenge of finding a way to upcycle them. My son is constantly coloring, painting, or crafting some sort of little project. Sometimes he’s just exploring his creativity, while other times we make crafts to help him learn more about God and how much Jesus loves him! As his little masterpieces began to pile up, I was searching for somewhere to hang them. It only seemed natural to put it in his bedroom, and I already had the bicycle wheels and a handful of clothespins on hand… It morphed into the PERFECT art gallery for his “Big boy” room!! Not only is it a fun and unique way to display my son’s artwork, it also teaches him that when we have a desire to re-purpose and upcycle, and can look at things with a new perspective, the possibilities are endless! His art gallery is a great conversation starter with many of our guest and many leave inspired to upcycle something unique for their own home. Who knew a few bicycle wheels could make such a cool display AND make a difference in our environment?

My husband and I recycle, and I am very much in support of recycling. The creative one in me, though, is a much bigger fan of up-cycling, if it can be useful. Plastic grocery bags are where I have chosen to put my focus. I know a lot of people who aren’t against recycling, they just don’t think about it, especially when it comes to plastic bags. In February I decided to start making plastic yarn out of these bags. This solved our plastic bag problem, but what I wanted to do required more grocery bags than what my husband and I collect each month. I asked my family members to please start giving me their bags. I sent out messages on Facebook and even got my Sunday school class involved. I have now collected roughly 1,000 plastic grocery bags. I crocheted the plastic yarn I made into sleeping mats. The plastic sleeping mats are easily cleaned with just water, they are not suitable for bugs to nest in, and they will not rot. These three qualities have made them perfect for our homeless or for those living in impoverished countries. I have just completed my first mat and will soon start my second. I have also gotten other churches involved in my area. Not only are we solving the problem of plastic in our landfills, we are providing for those in need. The mats aren’t luxury mats by any standards, but they provide a clean barrier for those who would otherwise have nothing. This project means a lot to me and I hope it gives others encouragement to do the same in their community as well.

As long as I can remember I have always been concerned for the environment. My parents raised us to pick up garbage, even if it wasn’t ours, from an early age. We try and recycle what we can, and upcycle anything we can find a use for. My husband built my greenhouse using reclaimed wood laying around our property. I garden organically every year, and we do not use chemicals in our yard. Once a week from early spring onwards my husband bikes 20 miles into work, and we try not to make more trips to town than we need to. I have been using and selling Norwex for my cleaning now for about 6 years.

The plastic bag one has been around awhile. Groups have been using clean outer milk bags as they are a thicker plastic. I keep all mine until I find someone who can use them.
